Polymer Synthesis

  1. Casting and spin coatingmethods

Energy Conversion Systems

  1. Fuel Cell electrolytes ( especially solid polymer electrolytes used in low temperature
    proton and anion exchange membrane fuel cells)
  2. Non-noble catalysts
  3. Electrochemical characterization and fuel cell performance tests

Energy Storage Systems

  1. Zinc-air battery and lithium ion battery systems
  2. Polymer electrolytes application
  3. Electrode materials synthesis and ORR characterization

1.) 2008- Present
Laboratory of Advanced Materials for Energy Storage & Conversion systems, Chemical Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park, graduate research assistant June.
Doctoral Thesis Project: Investigation on the Synthesis of Advanced Solid OH- Conductive Polymer Membrane for Alkaline Fuel Cells.

• Experiences in design and synthesis of controllable and tunable functional polymer materials (poly (methyl methacrylate-co-butyl acrylate-co-vinyl benzylchloride)) for alkaline fuel cells.

  1. Polymerization synthesis skills
    - Synthesis techniques: solution and miniemulsion radical copolymerization for the thesis, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization in preliminary data
    - Polymerization kinetics investigation: conversion, reactivity ratio, and monomer ratio adjustment to tune the composition in polymer materials
  2. Characterization skills
    - GPC for the molecular weight of the copolymer
    - 1H-NMR for measurement of the copolymer composition
    - DSC for glass transition temperature
    - DLS for the oil-in-water micellar size in miniemulsion copolymerization
    - TEM and SEM for the morphology of the polymer particles

• Experience in solvent membrane casting process and membrane characterization

  1. Working experience of sovlent casting for thin films
  2. Tensile tests for mechanical properties (Young’s modulus, tensile strength, and break at Yield)
  3. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for ion conductivity of the polymer membrane

• Experience in alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells operation and performance characterization and evaluation

  1. Membrane electrode assembly skills
    - Electrodes coating techniques: brush and spray coating of electrode materials
    - Working experience and strong background knowledge of Platinum, TiNi alloys (anode), MnxOy (cathode) as the electrode catalysts
  2. Experimental skills in fuel cell characterization
    - Polarization performance
    - Durability performance
2.) 2004-2006
Laboratory of chemical engineering and olefin polymerization, Chemical Engineering, Zhejiang University, senior undergraduate / graduate student
Research project: Investigation of constrained polymerization with mesoporous silicates as the templates and metallocene / late-transition catalysts to make nanoscale polyethylene (Undergraduate thesis: Extrusion Polymerization of Polyethylene)
  • Background knowledge of co-ordinate living polymerization and metallocene catalyst chemistry
  • Polymerization experience in extreme conditions of no water and no oxygen for co-ordinate polymerization
